Rehearsal Schedule for September 22
Here is the rehearsal schedule for next week:
Warm-up:
Foundations - p. 2, Concert F Around the Band
Foundations - p. 11, Scale in 3rds, Interval Study
Hymn to the Fallen
Duke Ellington - measures 1 to 55
He's Gone Away
Military Escort (all)
Eventide (ending)
On Parade (Trio - TRUMPETS!!!)
Ave Maria
Red Baron (1 - 43)
Questions to Ponder:
We had a lengthy discussion regarding the vertical structure of the first part of "On Parade". First of all, why is it important for me as a conductor to know this? Also, why isn't it enough that I know it? Why should I pass it on to you?
And again I ask in regards to "Hymn to the Fallen", how do we musically convey a feeling of reverence?
I look forward to hearing some of your thoughts!

2. Communication
Communication is so important considering how busy our lives are. I like to use several methods to communicate with my members. First of all, I will be giving each member my email address, home number and cell number in case I need to be reached. In addition, I have a blog that I will be updating at least once a week. The purpose of this blog is outline for the members what exactly the goals will be for the upcoming rehearsal so that they will know what to be working on during the course of the week. I also like to post recordings, information about pieces and any other interesting pieces of information and upcoming events that members may find useful. It is the responsibility of each member to regularly check this blog.
3. Attendance
It goes without saying that attendance at each and every rehearsal is important. What more can I say? If a member misses more than 3 rehearsals between concerts, that member may be asked to not play that concert and return for the next session. This will be done at the discretion of the conductor. In addition, if someone is going to be absent of even late then the section leader must be notified. Section leaders will be clearly identified and contact information will be given. As of this year, we will be needing to keep track of how we do with this issue.
4. Practising
Investing our time in practice is like investing money, smaller amounts, regularly and frequently will yield greater returns than large, infrequent and irregular amounts.
Silver band members are asked to achieve 3 or 4 sessions of 20 to 30 minutes each week outside of rehearsals.
5. Goals
This year, it is my goal:
To develop individual musicianship by:
1. Asking members to make their own musical decisions, rather than having a “top-down” approach from the conductor.
2. Encouraging members to set their own personal musical short-term and long-term goals.
To improve member involvement, team building and pride in the ensemble in the following ways:
1. More responsibility for individual members
2. More performance opportunities.
3. More high-quality workshops and clinicians.
To prepare a carefully laid-out literature-based skill development plan for the 2009/2010 season.
1. I will be preparing a yearly plan based on what performances we will be in and the music we will be preparing for them. In addition, I will look at which musical skills need to be addressed and how each piece of music will accomplish achieving these goals.
To be fully prepared in a wide variety of literature for each performance.
1. For each performance, I will choose a range of music that will appeal to the musicians and the audience, but at the same time have a high educational value that will further the development of the band.
2. I will continue to spend time each week carefully studying the scores so that I have a full understanding of the music. Then I can clearly identify (to myself and to the band) which sections need to be worked on.
To work on tone quality and tuning.
1. Each week, we will be working in the “Foundations for Superior Performance Book”. This will help us with many aspects of musicianship, especially tone quality and tuning. This will then help us apply what we have learned to our performance pieces.
I want to finish by reminding everyone to remember our motto, “We Love Music”. Never forget that every single one of us is here for the same reason. We love music. We need to make the most out of our time together each week. To do that, we must respect ourselves, each other and our great ensemble. We are not just individuals or sections. We are a band. A band that has so much to be proud of. With a positive attitude and pride in what we do, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish. So let’s have fun and make some music.
