Banff Music Retreat

Hello everyone,

I'd like to share with you my tentative plans for next year:

1. Banff Music Retreats - Oct. 16-18, 2009
2. Always & Forever - November 8, 2009
3. Mayor's Concert - December 12, 2009
4. Kiwanis Festival - March or April, 2010
5. Clinicians - May, 2010
6. Spring Concert - June 12, 2010

Now, you'll notice that the first item is something quite different from anything done before and I'm quite excited about it. However, before I can plan for it I need some feedback from all of you. Here are the details:
1. Depart Friday, Oct. 16 after work.
2. Spend Saturday with clinicians and a guest conductor.
3. Either have a planned activity for all of us (hot springs, movie, bowling, etc.) or just have time on our own.
4. Spend Sunday morning with the guest conductor and then return home.

Now for the fun part - the cost. The LCBS will be willing to pay for the clinicians, guest conductor and bussing. That leaves $200/person (at most) which would include lodging for 2 nights (double occupancy), all meals and an activity on Saturday night. These rates would go down should you decide to sleep 3 or 4 to a room and if we decide not to do an organized activity on Saturday night. Based on these figures, this means the LCBS will be subsidizing $150/person.

Also, you can get a tax receipt back after paying the $200.

This could be an amazing opportunity for musical growth and teambuilding for our band and I'd like for all of us to carefully consider this proposal. What I need to know from all of you is:

1. Would you be willing to budget $200 (at most) to go to Banff for the weekend?
2. Do the dates of October 16 - 18 work for you?

Please let me know as soon as possible if you think that this is something you could be a part of.

Thanks for considering this!

Canada Day

Hi everyone,

In a moment of post-concert fatigue, I mistakenly said that we would only need one rehearsal. Bad idea, I think! Sorry about that. We will rehearse on Tuesday, June 23 and Tuesday, June 30 at St. Joseph School in Coaldale. The address is 1413 23 Ave. next to St. Ambrose Church. Park in the parking lot on the west side of the school between the church and the school. The door on the west side of the school that is farthest north will be open.

Also, if anyone would like a recording of the concert, please bring a flash drive to Tracy at rehearsal. Thanks, Tracy!

Canada Day

Hello everyone,

Just an update on Canada. We will be setting up for the band at Henderson Lake (north side of the lake) at 11:00 so we'll need everyone we can there to help out. Remember, after 11:00 there will be no access to the lake by vehicle so you'll have to park somewhere and then walk. The performance starts at 12:00.

We'll be playing:
O Canada
Rolling Thunder
Amparito Roca
March of the Belgian Parachutists
Country Call

The next ones I'll be handing out to you on June 30:
Grease
Blue Tango
Celtic Dance
Addam's Family
Cartoon Symphony

These are all very easy for us, which is why we'll just run them the night before.

As for dress, we've always worn red and white but if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

WE DID IT!

Hello everyone,

First of all, I would like to congratulate each and everyone of you on a terrific performance on Saturday. Without a doubt, it was our finest performance we've had. We have proven that we are able to handle a much bigger event than we've had in the past. Thank you to all of you your commitment and dedication.

We won't have rehearsal this Tuesday (June 16). I feel that we will only need one rehearsal before Canada so we either have to have a rehearsal either on June 23 or on June 30 (the night before we play). Unfortunately, CCH is unavailable both June 23 and June 30 so we will have to rehearse at my school. I feel that June 30 is our best way to go. So please mark your calendars that Tuesday, June 30 will be the only rehearsal that we have before Canada Day and that it will take place at St. Joseph School in Coaldale (1413 23 Ave.) Also, please let me know if you are unavailable to play at Canada Day.

See you on June 30!

Contemporary Works Jazz Orchestra (CWJO)
Friday, June 19th ~ 8pm
@ The Slice
Tickets $10

The Contemporary Works Jazz Orchestra (CWJO) is a 17-member jazz ensemble comprised of professional musicians in the Lethbridge area and is directed by saxophonist/composer David Renter. Their repertoire covers a wide variety of music, including classic arrangements from Count Basie & Duke Ellington to modern composers such as Maria Schneider, Thad Jones, & Kenny Wheeler.

Joel Miller Quartet (from Montreal)
(w/David Renter Quartet opening)
Saturday, June 20th ~ 8pm
@ The Slice
Tickets $15

Ever since he first picked up the saxophone at the age of 10, Joel Miller knew he wanted to be a jazz musician. He grew up in a house full of music. His father was a classical composer and professor at Mount Alison University. When he was 18, he moved to Montreal to study jazz at McGill University and has pursued this goal and built a solid career around his original compositions that feature deceptively simple melodies combined with complex harmonic structures. During this concert, Joel plans to focus on compositions from his latest two albums, "Tantramar" and "Mandala". Joining Joel will be Eric St. Laurent on acoustic/electric guitars, Fraser Hollins on bass & Martin Auguste on drums.

Joel & his band will also be giving a workshop Sunday, June 21st @ 2pm in the UofL Fine Arts Building W470 (Tickets are $5 and are available at the door).

What's left to do before the big day?

ELEVEN DAYS UNTIL THE CONCERT!!

With less than two weeks before the concert, we need to be seriously thinking about what we have to do to make this concert a success. Besides the obvious (practising, attending rehearsal, etc.) there are a few more things that we can do to make our hard work and extra time at rehearsal pay off.

1. SELL TICKETS. On Tuesday night, Bonnie will be issuing each of you 5 tickets. You are asked to sell all of these to friends, families, enemies, or whoever (should that be whomever?). If you run out, by all means, GET MORE! The capacity of the church is 700. I don't think we'll reach that but a typical audience size for us is 150 people. We need to at least sell 200 to make this concert worthwhile.

2. TELL THE WORLD. Plaster every surface imaginable with our posters. Email everyone (repeatedly) in your contact list to tell them about our event. In other words, be a pain!

Our committee has worked hard to organize this event. Now it's your turn to do your part. Sell those tickets!!

Canada Day

Hi everyone,

A few people have asked about Canada Day. We will be performing at 12:00 at Henderson Lake. The only other detail that I have so far is that there will be no vehicle traffic at the park after 11:00. I propose that we arrive at or just before 11:00 to set up everything we need. We will warm-up at 11:45 and play at 12:00.

We will play:
O Canada
Rolling Thunder
Amparito Roca
March of the Belgian Parachutists
Country Call
Rhosymedre

We'll need more music than that so I will be pulling out some "oldies but goodies" from our past. I won't do that until after June 13 though.
